Special Topics in Counselling

This course provides students in the helping professions with knowledge of theory and experiential practice in selected topics in counseling. Our focus is on working with grief and loss, and death and dying.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:

  1. What is loss- life events perspective – understanding primary, secondary and accompanying losses
  2. Why we grieve – types of grief – models and theories as grief as a process
  3. Working with clients in grief –reframing, moderating factors – support groups – role of ritual and ceremony
  4. Special topics – children and youth, grief in the work place
  5. Getting real with death – how and where we die
  6. The world of hope and denial
  7. The fear of death tree
  8. Talking about endings and having difficult conversations
  9. End of life planning – a ‘how to’ guide
  10. How we can die better

Course Length: 12 weeks

Course Hours: 48

Prerequisites: COUN 100

Other Requirements: Enrollment in Addiction Counsellor Diploma or Professional Counsellor Diploma program or special permission from the admissions department.
