Navitas is seeking to employ a Counsellor to join our North American team in Burnaby, BC.
Reporting to the Case Manager, the Counsellor will manage a caseload of identified at-risk students, and liaise with health authorities and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the Fraser International College (FIC) community has access to the skills, training and resources needed to ensure the health and safety of its members. The Counsellor is an integral part of the FIC Wellness Office, assisting the College to effectively deliver its teaching, learning and support service goals.

Key Responsibilities
- Support the Case Manager in the delivery of holistic and culturally sensitive wellness services and programming to support all areas of student life, ensuring students have a smooth transition into the College and to the University Partner.
- Develop and deliver psychoeducational and skills-based workshops rooted in theoretical framework.
- Support students struggling with mental health concerns using a collaborative, strengths-based, systems-focused and person- centered approach.
- Promote and liaise with our Student Health Insurance Provider Guard. Me and the ISSP program regarding student health needs
- Conduct biopsychosocial and mental health assessments and use active listening and crisis response skills to help meet immediate, basic needs and make appropriate referrals to other health and support services.
- Establish personalized health and care plans in collaboration with students
- Provide outreach-based supports, as needed, in the community including accompaniment to appointments and advocacy in accordance with established care plans
- Maintain confidential case notes and, for continuity of care, communicate relevant concerns to the Case Manager
- Utilize a confidential cloud-based client management system for record keeping, documentation, file-sharing, scheduling and communication.
- Support students in accessing appropriate resources on campus and in the community
- Gather statistics on counselling usage and engage in reporting
- Engage with best practices/standards of practice in the field of counselling
- Other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum of a CPCA (Canadian Professional Counsellor) Designation.
- Overseas credentials will be considered with supporting Canadian equivalency accreditation.
- Understanding of academic expectations and the difficulties faced by international students undertaking post-secondary studies, particularly transitional issues
- Ability to make sound judgements, problem solve, establish rapport, provide support and advocate for a diverse range of individuals.
- Knowledge of a variety of counselling techniques and therapeutic interventions and understanding of the holistic, systemic, cultural and environmental factors that influence one’s wellbeing
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in a diverse, multicultural environment or with international students.
- Conflict resolution, boundary-setting and crisis intervention skills
- Demonstrated time management and personal organization skills to effectively support a full caseload
- Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple issues/tasks
- Demonstrated ability working collaboratively in a team setting as well as independently
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, internet and intranet technologies
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
Desirable Skills
- Experience working in a higher education environment
- Fluency in an additional language to English
- Preference will be given to candidates with training specific to mental health needs (i.e.; the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health First Aid Training).
